All last week Nick has been attending a fishing camp down at Short Beach in Smithtown. They have been teaching them how to surf cast and fish from the beach. The’ve used all sorts of different rigs and he even has caught some keepers. Here are some of the ones we actually got to eat. They were Porgies and they were delicious. Nick even helped Paula clean them.
Today I had my first Fly Fishing lesson at Caleb Smith State Park with a great instructor. Fred Thorner is a long time fly fisherman and has authored his own book about how to get started in fly fishing. His class was geared for the beginner and really gave me a good start with the basics. I enjoyed begin out on the pond and trying my hand at casting. I can’t wait to get out there on my own and practice.
This past Saturday the family went on a Cub Scout sponsored fishing trip out of Captree State Park. We boarded the “Yankee III” at 3:45pm and headed out to Fire Island Inlet to do some Fluke fishing. We all caught several fish, even though none of them were keepers. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and both Alex and Nicholas had a great time fishing. We had such a good time that we’ll have to do it again soon.
This past weekend we took our annual camping trip. We stayed at the NYS DEC campground “Little Pond” which is in the Catskills in NY. It is a nice place, with well maintained facilities and very picturesque views. This year we chose to camp in a more remote site on the back side of the pond. The site was perfect, nice and quiet and natural. We were situated right up at the edge of the pond and the boys had fun catching fish, and salamanders. Alex spent his time out on the pond in the Kayak and Paula and I just enjoyed the quiet. The only down side was that since it was a remote site all our provisions had to be hiked in. We were about 1/4 mile in from the parking lot so all our gear was carried or wheeled in. And since it was bear season and the rangers had warned us that bears had been seen recently by our site that we should make sure to pack up all our food and put it in the car each night. The weather was a bit of a bummer but we survived and had a good time.
